Schroeder: How about an introduction?

Meaty Ogre: I'm Meaty Ogre, 30 years old, music obsessor, beat maker, drummer, father, vinyl collector and Illinois music fanatic.

Schroeder: It's been 4 years since your last releases, “Freezerburner” and “Carne Asada”. What have you been up to since then?

Meaty Ogre: Well, I have a 4 year old son, so put two and two together. 2 years ago I opened a record store out in Phoenix called Grandiose, which was open for a year and I shut it down after some personal things were taking up more time in my life. I just moved back to Chicago and I've been laying low, making music when I have the time, still buying lots of records and getting samples and ideas together always. I am trying to change my set up around since I just moved, and start with a new approach to the way I make beats.

Schroeder: Care to elaborate on your new approach to making beats?

Meaty Ogre: Well, I've always just made beats on Acid, never really intending on playing them in beat battles or live routines and stuff, but now I'm kind of approaching things trying to reverse engineer my beats. I started playing drums when I was 6 years old, and have always wanted to incorporate that into live sets, so I'm working on getting a v drum kit, and being able to plug in all my samples and sounds and what not to get an interesting and banging live set together with that. I've got some cool new gear in the past year, like an Oberheim TVS-1 synth, an original Korg vocoder VC-1, an E-mu Emax keyboard and other things too. I'm trying to incorporate those into all my beats now.

Schroeder: “Sword” is your latest release. How did you and Crushcon get together for the project?

Meaty Ogre: I've known Crushcon for about 4 years through Zavala and other mutual friends, and had been hearing a lot about Fieldwerk stuff he was doing when I was in Phoenix. He just hit me up and asked if I wanted to do a split EP and I was definitely pumped to put something out again, and the timing was right.

Schroeder: In an older interview, you stated that you created a track by concentrating on the drums first and then playing with records until something caught your ear. Has your process for creating a track changed over the years?

Meaty Ogre: I've always usually started with drums and worked from there, I've been playing drums since I was a kid, and I think I always think about how the drums will sound and the programming should sound over the samples I want to use.

Schroeder: Heardrums Records, a label you and Dreas founded, has not put out any vinyl releases for a few years now. What is the status of the label?

Meaty Ogre: We have tons of material ready to go, I think its just been a matter of logistics and money and timing not syncing up. We are definitely going to release some more records soon, hopefully early next year.

Schroeder: How is the Human Suit LP with Mestizo and Isiah Toothtaker coming along?

Meaty Ogre: I've been trying to make some murder bangers to send those dudes, it takes a lot of energy to make something I feel is right for certain projects, and the Human Suit stuff has to murder, and I've been in a sort of different mind state from making the grimy ass beats that would fit for them... but I have some stuff up my sleeve always. I'm excited to hear the project either way.

Schroeder: Are there any other projects you're working on at the moment that we can look forward to?

Meaty Ogre: I'm really pushing to put out another solo LP or at least an EP early next year, I'm just juggling a million other things right now. Life is getting in the way, but in a good way, change is good. I love releasing 45s, and once I get the time to sit down and plan it out, I'm going to start my own label and start releasing my own music non stop.

Schroeder: Top 5 favorite producers of all time?

Meaty Ogre: (sorry to be cliche)

1. Prince Paul
2. DJ Muggs
3. Premier
4. DJ Paul and Juicy J
5. RZA

Schroeder: Top 5 best things about Chicago?

Meaty Ogre:

1. The best food in the world
2. Lake Michigan
3. Endless supplies of records
4. Hot thrift action
5. Affordable rent for a big city

Schroeder: Any parting words?

Meaty Ogre: I've been on the low for the past 4 years doing life stuff and haven't released much, but I thank those of you who've been supporting me and keeping me motivated to make music. The beat scene has grown insanely in the past 5 years, so many raw dudes out there releasing stuff, so its an exciting time to be apart of all this stuff.

Be sure to check out Meaty Ogre's new release "Sword" out on Fieldwerk Recordings.

Thanks and peace to Dana. Be sure to check out her blog at www.lilmissspelled.com

so called life: What’s your name?

stuck in the past: Schroeder

so called life: Where ya from?

stuck in the past: Jersey

so called life: When did you realize that you where stuck in the past?

stuck in the past: Just from growing older. The older I get, the more nostalgic I become for the days when hip-hop music was in its prime. I feel very fortunate to have grown up when I did in that respect.

so called life: How long has Stuck in the Past been around?

stuck in the past: Stuck in the Past just turned 3 years old. It started out as a radio show I had while I was attending school at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. When I graduated, I wanted to continue doing the show in some capacity, so I decided to make it a podcast.

so called life: How do you feel about the current state of hip-hop? You think these kids could take a few tips from the past?

stuck in the past: How much time do we have? I’ll just say this. While there’s some great hip-hop music still being made today, I also think there is a ton of crap out there as well. It’s a new generation. I’d like to think kids are educating themselves about the culture and the pioneers of the music. But the truth is, most kids today are content with being spoon fed whatever MTV and the radio deems hip-hop. Unfortunately those same sources don’t provide any variety nor much reference to the music or the artists of the past.

so called life: I know this is hard, but name your top 5 favorite groups/rappers?

stuck in the past: In no particular order.

Groups
- Wu-Tang Clan
- A Tribe Called Quest
- Pete Rock & CL Smooth
- Public Enemy
- Gangstarr

Rappers
- Chuck D
- Big L
- Rakim
- Redman
- Kool G Rap

so called life: What’s your favorite cereal?

stuck in the past: I’m addicted to granola cereal. I know I’m boring.

so called life: Boo whoo Guru, any plans for tribute to Guru podcast?

stuck in the past: The latest episode is indeed a Guru tribute show.

so called life: Your Halloween costume from last year was pretty amazing, do you think you can outdo it this year?

stuck in the past: Thanks. I’m sure going to try. Humpty Hump is going to be tough to top but I’ve got some ideas floating around.

so called life: Got anything else to say?

stuck in the past: Thanks to you Dana for conducting this interview. Peace to all of my listeners both past and present and peace to everyone who also feels like they are stuck in the past.
